What Are the Symptoms of Autism?

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Ron_Keegan] Ron Keegan Diagnosing autism is a very subjective process, though the DSM IV lists specific criteria that must be met for a formal diagnosis of autism. Autism is diagnosed when a child meets A) at least six items on the following criteria, with at least two from the first set, and at least one each from the second and third. The criteria are: 1.) impairment of social functioning in one of the following ways a. impairment in using eye-to-eye contact, facial expression, body posture and gestures to regulate social interaction :: The child may fail to make eye contact when speaking, or openly resist making eye contact when you attempt to engage their gaze. Their facial expressions may be inappropriate to the conversation, or unchanging. They don’t display ‘normal’ body language and gestures. b. does not develop peer relationships appropriate to age:: Your child may not seem to ‘fit’ with the other kids in a playgroup. If the other children are playing together and sharing toys, he may be the one sitting in the middle of the group oblivious to them while he pursues his own interests. He doesn’t engage in the same type of mirroring, parallel play or interaction as other children his age. c. does not spontaneously seek to share enjoyment, interests or achievements with others :: The child doesn’t bring toys to other people to show them, or point out things that are interesting to them. By age 2, most children are trying to share their interests with parents and those around them. When a child never does, it’s cause for concern.:: d. ‘lack of social or emotional recipricocity’ (described as ‘not participating in social activities or games, preferring solitary activities or involving others in activities only as tools or mechanical aids) :: The child doesn’t engage in social give and take. This one can be confusing - especially the part about using others as ‘tools’ or ‘mechanical aids’. An example may be the child who sits in your lap and rocks without seeming to acknowledge that you exist other than as a seat.:: 2.) Impairments in communication characterized by:a) delay in or total absence of spoken speech without an attempt to compensate by using gestures or signals. b) in children with speech, the inability to initiate or sustain a conversation with others. c) stereotyped or repetitive use of language such as echoing words spoken by others or repeating words or phrases compulsively d) lack of imaginative play or social play that imitates others 3.) restricted stereotyped and repetitive behavior, interests and activities, characterized by: a. an abnormal preoccupation with one or more area of interest b. inflexible insistence on certain rituals or routines c. stereotyped or repetitive gestures or motions (e.g. hand-flapping, finger flapping, rocking, twisting) that may involve the entire body, or just one part of it. d. Persistent preoccupation with parts of objects B) Delays or abnormal functioning in one or more of the following: 1.) Social interaction 2.) Language for communication 3.) Symbolic or imaginary play C) The condition doesn’t fit Rett’s syndrome or Childhood Disintegrative Disorder There’s no doubt that the topic of autism symptoms can be fascinating. Thursday, September 27th, 2007

By Brenda Franzo Spring is in the air and its time to shed those winter pounds and set your health and fitness goals. How we feel physically plays an important part in all aspects of our lives. It affects our moods and our energy levels. Exercise, nutrition and diet all play a vital part in our physical health. Fitness is about keeping your body in shape and tuned up. Nutrition is about getting the right ingredients to your body to keep it running smoothly. Both help you feel energized, which is so important in ones motivation and overall happiness, which in turn improves our overall physical health. Heres a few simple ideas to get you started and to help you set your goals. Drink plenty of water. Yes, this is simple but so important. Its easier said than done. Keep a water bottle with you wherever you go. Water is important! It helps with fat loss, helps rid the body of impurities, and carries away all the waste from the body. It is recommended for that you should drink 8 glasses of water every day. Start stretching. Stretch anytime, a couple times a day. Stretching is great first thing in the morning but remember to stretch as you go about your day, during work and in the evenings. Stretching increases your circulation and your flexibility. It also reduces stress and improves coordination. Start walking. Take a walk around the block, then go from there. Again, its a good thing to walk first thing in the morning because it gets you going but walking anytime that you can will be just as good. Walking gives you more energy, helps you sleep better, helps you get your leg muscles in shape and as with any type of exercise, it helps reduce stress. Make healthy choices when eating. Avoid junk food and those simple carbs like pies, potato chips, white bread, juice drinks with added sugar, candy, and soda. Eat protein which helps build healthy muscles. Protein can be found in chicken breast, lean ground turkey, fish and egg whites. Look for the fat content in foods that you eat and avoid trans fats and saturated fats. Take these ideas and make them a part of your daily routine. It may not be easy at first, but grasping these simple ideas will help you set your goals and begin your fitness routine. Chiropractic Schools in Minnesota

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

By Michael Bustamante Chiropractic schools in Minnesota train chiropractors (also called chiropractic physicians) to diagnose and treat patients with muscular, nervous, and skeletal system problems, especially problems associated with the spine. Chiropractors believe that imbalance in joints or the spine can interfere with physical systems and, consequently, with normal functions. People with such problems suffer unnecessary disease and pain, and the practice of chiropractics can help. Minnesota chiropractic schools provide training in the various forms of chiropractics for effective, low-cost, non-invasive healthcare. Students interested in the practical and philosophical approaches to healthcare will find great satisfaction in getting their education and degree, and beginning a chiropractic practice. The chiropractic approach to health care is holistic, stressing overall health and wellness of each individual client. There are many factors that promote health, and all chiropractic schools teach the importance of taking into account exercise, diet, rest, environment, and factors of heredity to diagnose and treat patients. Students are taught natural, drug-free, non-surgical forms of treatment, as well as reliance on the body’s inherent powers to heal and rejuvenate. Students learn when to recommend changes in lifestyle, eating habits, exercise, and sleeping habits to improve the health of their patients. They also learn when and how to consult and confer with other healthcare professionals and to make referrals when appropriate. Students in chiropractic schools in Minnesota will learn under the tutelage of experience practicing professionals to assess client needs and to provide supplemental skeletal adjustments to promote overall health. Chiropractic courses generally include science and clinical studies, and most schools provide options for certificates and Bachelor Science (BS) degrees. Graduate students may choose to further their chiropractic studies to obtain Master of Science (MS) or Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) Degrees. Chiropractic schools in Minnesota also allow students to specialize in various areas of chiropractics, such as pediatrics, orthopedics, sports injuries, neurology, diagnostic imaging, nutrition, and internal disorders. Upon graduation, you will need professional certification to become a member of this in-demand healthcare profession. You will soon find that the excellent income potential makes for a satisfying venture into this healthcare field. Experienced and well-educated chiropractors can make incomes in excess of $100,000 a year! Cellular Phone Service Companies

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Josh_Riverside]Josh Riverside Cellular phone service companies offer a range of services for cellular phone users such as postpaid and prepaid services, roaming and Internet facility. They come up with many packages to survive the intense competition in the market. Cellular phone service offers vary from region to region. Hence users need to know about a particular company’s coverage, facilities and service prices before signing a contract. Customers need to identify the cellular phone service provider in their region. The difficult task after buying a cellular phone is the selection of a suitable cellular phone service provider. Users must focus on the firm that gives better value, more benefits and a profitable deal that suits their requirements. While selecting a cellular phone service provider, prime importance is given to the area of coverage. The best cellular phone service company gives the best network service, coverage, plans, call costs and global roaming agreement. It is advisable to make a list of companies and their plans, including the minutes they give, the deposit they need and the duration of the contract. Those who need the cellular phone for overseas use are advised to choose a service provider who can offer more roaming capabilities. Clients must be assured of dedicated customer service before making a deal with a service provider. The technology used by various cellular phone service companies differs. There are both digital and analog cellular phone services. Digital services are usually clearer and more secure than analog services. Analog services extend more coverage than digital services. But analog services have poor sound quality and reduced privacy. Digital services have high sound quality, high security and the ability to support next generation services. Most cellular phone service companies provide digital services. They offer roaming option to get more coverage. Many cellular phone service companies cover the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) and Global System for Mobile (GSM) platforms. Each of these platforms has its own merits such as reduced background noise, security protection and global roaming. Feeling the Squeeze with a Potential Car Lemon?

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Earl Powers No one buys a new vehicle expecting it to break down time and time again. However, these days consist of corporate finger-pointing and not wanting to take responsibility for any potential problems. Consumers have to take care and trust no one but themselves when it comes to a car lemon and they have to arm themselves with the latest on their state’s car lemon law. Unfortunately, that means always being diligent about documentation and keeping paperwork, no matter what is involved. According to most lemon laws, a vehicle is considered a lemon when it has a defect or malfunction that continually pops up despite repairs and could be a potential hazard to the driver’s safety. Every state is different and has special requirements on the number of times a vehicle should be brought in for service for the same defect before it is considered a car lemon. The lemon law of California states that four attempts should be made to repair the same defect. However, the lemon law of Florida states that it is three attempts. It is every man for himself, so that is why documentation is so important. Sometimes, the vehicle you bought new is not presumed a lemon until the warranty is out of date or the number of miles on the odometer is over the limit specified in your state’s lemon law. The documentation you keep - repair visits, routine maintenance, etc. - will help uphold your rights under the car lemon law. When you are getting warranty work done on your car, make notes on each and every person you talked with about your maintenance and repairs. Ask for quotes as well as actual work done in writing. Just because some repair work may have been done under warranty and therefore covered by the manufacturer does not mean you are not entitled to an invoice. The burden of proof lies with you. Another tip is to have the authorized repair center make note of your complaint on your invoice. Make sure that every time you receive a receipt or any piece of paper with your car statistics that it has your car’s odometer reading listed too. Write down the date and time of all of your phone conversations. Sometimes, managers and other decision makers will claim that they did not receive any messages from you. Be sure to get last names and employee titles where applicable. It will be harder for anyone to ‘pass the buck’ with your documentation. As a consumer, you have certain rights under your state’s lemon laws. If you have any trouble with the manufacturer making good on your car, you can consult with lemon law attorneys. They will help you understand your rights. The lesson to be learned when buying a new car, is always expect a car lemon. That way you will be prepared for anything that happens. Usefulness is Key to Promotion

By Tina Rinaudo Professional tradeshow attendees know that one of the top reasons for attending is the swag theyll walk away with. Some is useless, some is fun for a minute and other swag is useful for weeks, months, even years. Your purpose for setting up a booth at tradeshows is to have as many attendees walking out the door with your useful swag in their hands as possible. Of course, you probably have a budget to keep in mind. For these reasons, plastic pens are the way to go. Plain Plastic Pens Any plastic pen will always stand out against blas paper handouts and free AOL CDs. They wont necessarily stand out against other plastic pens, foam footballs or handy highlighters. They can be enjoyed more often than either the football or the highlighter, its at that point you can make a big impact without spending a fortune. Consider the popular Slinky plastic pen, starting at 0.21 each including a single imprint color. You have a number of color choices when you choose the Slinky, including red, blue, black and silver. Sometimes a brightly colored pen is all you need to stand out in the bag of swag that will go back to the office and be doled out. The Elegance Pens are inexpensive plastic pens, starting at 0.15 each, great for promotional events. The plunger action makes the clicking easy and enjoyable. These also come in various plastic pen barrel color choices including red, blue, black, green and orange. Grippy plastic pens are relatively plain on the outside but offer a softer writing experience with a rubber grip on the lower half of the pen. Starting at 0.29 a piece, these pens come in four colors and include a single color imprint. Additional color imprints are available for a few pence more. Fancy Plastic Pens You can say a lot more about your business without spending a whole lot more with fancy plastic pens. Protus pens, for example, look like colored metal on the outside barrel with drilled metal clips great for technological clients. For just 0.34 each, these are reasonably priced to boot. Planeta ball pens are funky printed plastic pens that come in bright colors green, yellow, purple, red or blue. Not only are they fun to look at and easy to find, they are a joy to use thanks to the larger-than-normal barrel. Springo manufactures a couple styles of visible spring pens that catch and hold the attention of any pen-pusher. The clicking action, controlled by a spring, can be seen through the transparent upper barrel. Starting at 0.34 each, both the satin and frosted plastic pens are sure to hold the attention of anyone who takes it home. Go with a super fat or oversized pen to create buzz around the tradeshow. The Mega ball pen, starting at 0.37 each, offers a fatter barrel than most other plastic pens which equates to more room for your message. The Giant ball pen is a steal at 0.22 each. Can Pay Per View Help You Get A Better Hair Style?

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

By Perriann Rodriguez Have you ever taken a hair styles photo to your hair stylist and asked for the exact same cut, only to be disappointed with the results? Many times, the reason for such a situation is that a lot of hair stylists do not have the time or money to attend hair cutting education and training programs or to purchase very expensive training videos to learn the latest techniques for trendy and sometimes complicated hair styles of today. Francesco Rizzuto, founder of www.hair-brain.com, conducted four focus groups and determined without exception that hair stylists conveyed that they all wanted the education, but they all wanted it to fit into their lives and budget. He adds that there are a lot of single moms in the hair industry that simply cannot afford to attend high quality classes or shows, some of them even live in areas where traveling to get to a class is not an option. Rizzuto analyzed his marketing research and decided to investigate opening a video store with affordable rental training tapes. He says, If hairdressers had access to current hair education on a rental basis, then they would be more enticed to learn and be motivated. After exploring the concept of a video store further, Rizzuto discovered that there would not be enough current material out there to fill a video store. The content that was available was old, outdated or very expensive. And then a light bulb went on and the idea of a Pay Per View video hair instructional website was born. Anyone anywhere in the world could view the instructional videos online for a very reasonable fee and apply what they had learned immediately. So the website www.hair-brain.com was developed and officially launched in July 2005. Rizzuto, a salon owner, hairdresser, fashion photographer and educator, also decided to film his own content. Each 15-20 minute video takes about 3 hours to film and a few more hours to edit. The videos, which cost $6.95 to view once, are primarily education based, and sometimes mention certain tools or products that work well with the hair styles they are creating. They last between 15 and 20 minutes and can only be viewed once. Basically what Hair-Brain offers is the ability to get the education without having to buy the video at a considerable cost. Most hairdressers agree that once they see how its done they have no need for the video. With Hair-Brain they can look at it as if its a rental, although the movie presentations are available for purchase at a very low cost, $17.95USD. Rizzuto hand picks all of the educators that present the videos on the site based on their outstanding work in the industry. Some are well known, such as Martin Parsons, and corporate educators such as Schwarzkopf. Currently there are about thirty video presentations to choose from on the website, and Rizzuto plans to add about 30 more by the end of the year. Some of the topics available include the tousled look, mid length cut, retro fashion Mohawk, layers with long hair, shine and texture, Spanish look with extensions, texturizing short hair, heavy layered cut, hair color, wedding updo and 5 tail chignon among many others. The training videos are not limited to hair instruction, as there is a video by Dr. John Arlette where he demonstrates Botox and Fillers. By observing these before and after videos, consumers can make a more informed choice with respect to non surgical procedures. Rizzuto has included Dr. John Arlette as an educator because Botox fits into the Hair-Brain.com format of education plus beauty. Future videos will include techniques for hair extensions for professionals and consumers, perming, barbering, coloring, bridal looks, braiding, ethnic hair and straightening just to name of few. They also plan to endorse and perhaps retail quality tools of the trade that are mentioned on the site. Although Hair-Brain was first designed for the professional hairdresser, Rizzuto mentions that he is finding on occasion that the consumer is logging on to find a look that they like. Recently, a woman wrote us to let us know that she found the perfect look for her wedding on Hair-Brain.com (Martin Parsons Wedding Band updo featured on the site currently). She was going to tell her hairdresser to go to the site and learn it so he could do it for her wedding day, Rizzuto says. Rizzuto says so far www.hair-brain.com has been a great success. We are getting clients from the USA, Canada, UK, Japan and even Brazil. Once of our clients recently purchased one of each of our videos, he adds. Salon Magazines (Canada) publisher Laura Dunphy wrote in her editorial Back to school (September issue) that www.hair-brain.com is A brilliant solution for hairdressers. In short, pay per view CAN help you get a better hair style. The education and training videos are available 24 hours a day, anywhere in the world and all for a low price. It is designed by hairstylists for hairstylists. For the price of a large gourmet coffee today, you can be a better hairdresser tomorrow. Is your hair stylist a Hair Brain? Francesco Rizzuto is 44 years old and has been in the hair industry since 1978 when he started hair design school in Toronto, Canada. After graduation, he worked as an assistant at Vidal Sassoon and was awarded the position of Junior Stylist after one year of very hard work. Eventually he worked his way up to chief educator. Education is a very big part of the Vidal Sassoon Formula. Francesco has fulfilled his vision of creating an affordable, accessible, and most importantly, effective educational tool for beauty industry professionals, fashion enthusiasts, and the general public. Currently he juggles his schedule as a salon owner, hairdresser, fashion photographer and educator. Hair-Brain.com offices are currently located in Calgary, Alberta in Canada. Outdoor Fountains - How To Transform Your Backyard Into An Oasis Of Calm!

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

By Caroline Smith If your garden or patio is in need of a makeover, you may want to consider adding an outdoor fountain to instantly improve the look and feel of the space. Garden fountains can be incorporated into practically any garden design, and the sight and sound of moving water they produce can be marvelously relaxing. Even in a small city garden, the gentle trickling sound of water has the power to soothe and inspire, creating a tranquil escape from the noisy world outside and helping to wash away our worries. Outdoor water fountains come in all sorts of designs, from those with cascading waterfalls to those that include a bird bath pool, from those that spout jets of water into the air, to decorative wall fountains. There is a huge range of themes to choose from, depending on the style you’re after for your garden’s new image. Classical, Oriental, Southwestern-inspired and contemporary fountains are some of the many options available. A well-chosen water fountain can become a stunning feature of your backyard or patio, attracting the eye and soothing the senses. Outdoor fountains are made from durable, weather-resistant materials that can stand up to the elements, such as cast resin or brushed copper. They are easy to set up, most simply requiring you to plug them in and add water. Solar fountains are a popular alternative to those that run on electric pumps. These come with a solar panel attached, which needs to be placed in a sunny spot in order to power the pump using the power of the sun. A bonus of solar powered fountains is there are no running costs, as they rely on a free natural resource. Adding a water fountain to your garden, patio or balcony is a great way to create a welcoming and calming environment, where you can happily unwind and forget your cares. An outdoor fountain can bring a peaceful touch to your garden, transforming it into a sanctuary of calm and tranquility where you can retreat from the stresses of modern life. Caroline Smith is a regular contributor to GoFountains.com - an online resource offering a great choice of garden & indoor water fountains, including solar fountains, tabletop fountains and much more. A Piece of the Puzzle

Monday, September 17th, 2007

By Terry Coyier Being bipolar is a royal pain in the butt, no doubt about it. But, when I was first diagnosed it was actually a relief to me. Finally there was an answer. The answer meant I was crazy, but it made perfect sense. It explained away so many things. I had a reason for why I lashed out at people and why I was suspicious of everyones intentions towards me and why I could be so joyful one minute and so glum the next. Then to find out that I could take some pills and feel better, I was nearly beside myself with the glorious expectations. Couple that with some therapy and I would be normal. Well, I was consumed with being bipolar. I read everything I could get my hands on. I enlisted family and friends to act as my support group and to serve as my guinea pigs. Everything I learned I tested out on one of them. Did this example fit my behavior? Did I act this way or that way? What about such and such? I monitored my moods, my dreams, my meds, my cycles, my side effects, my habits, others habits, how many times I let the dog out okay not that one, my triggers, my warning signs, even my chocolate intake! I was finally monitored out! But I was bipolar and that was something. So, I was doing just fine and decided to switch meds (with the approval of my pdoc) because I had somehow gone from a size 7 to a size 14! Big mistake. Just inside of 6 weeks I landed in the ICU for a 4-day visit and then another 5 days in the psychiatric hospital. This was a great hospital though (with the exception of one grouchy nurse who thought she was a doctor). I was well taken care of, it was clean, the group therapy was actually productive and I got back on the right meds again. I had outpatient therapy for about two weeks after I was released from the hospital. The therapy there was wonderful as well. I learned the proper responses to difficult situations. I learned I wasnt the meanest person in Texas (there was another guy there who took my spot!). I learned how to fight fair and express my feelings. Most important, I learned how to give up control. Now, control is a big issue for me. I dont like to be in situations that I dont have control. Its not an ego related problem, its an I dont have control over my feelings, so I will control everything else problem. It took me a long time to get to this point. I had been reading self-help books for half my life (13 years) and thought I had some idea of how things worked. Ha! I was still pretty clueless. But, now I was finally getting somewhere. Unfortunately it was at a snails pace. Control isnt relinquished at the drop of a hat. Especially a triple Aries with a type A personality! This is one obstinate ram here, and with red hair and green eyes, I am as pigheaded as they come. Very slowly I came around. Im not completely there yet, but Im still relentless in my quest. Terry J. Coyier is a 37-year-old college student studying for an Associates of Applied Sciences degree. She is also a freelance writer who writes about bipolar disorder and other mental illnesses. About These Newfangled Stamps

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

By Aldene Fredenburg It used to be a well-known fact that nobodys image would appear on a U.S. postage stamp until after that person had kicked the bucket; cashed in his chips; gone to the great beyond. No one was supposed to be honored with a postage stamp in the U.S. until after he or she was dead. And then Bugs Bunny showed up on a stamp, and Goofy. And I thought: Bugs Bunny is dead? Goofy has gone through that great doggy door in the sky? When did this happen?! I didnt know they were sick! But it gets worse! Now, anybody can contact the U.S. Post Office via the Internet and order postage stamps with the likeness of their choice. Your own mug, staring out at your relatives and bill collectors from the upper right-hand corner of every envelope you send. Put yourself, or your kids, or your cat Fluffy on a legal U.S. stamp and send it around the world. Of course, if you have relatives who know useless information like the fact that the only people on postage stamps are supposed to be dead guys, you may have some explaining to do next time the phone rings. Hello? Hi, Grandma. What? No, Aunt Tildie is fine. I saw her this morning. No, Fluffys fine, too! Hes sitting right here on my lap. Fluffy, sayFluffy? Fluffy! FluFFFYYYYY! Oh, well. At least philatelists have another category of stamp to collectstamps created by wacky people who dont know enough to stay off of a stamp until after theyre dead.
